DVB--T2 divisions surface in Czech Republic

CAEK CONGRESS – PRAGUE. Important differences of opinion have emerged between two key players overseeing the adoption of the DVB-T2 standard in the Czech Republic.

Replying to a presentation by Marcel Procházka on behalf of the national transmission company Ceske Radiokomunikace (CRa), Pavel Dvorak, chairman of the Czech Telecom Office (CTU), said that the regulator would under no circumstances allow commercial DVB-T2 trials.
Instead, they will have to have technical goals.
Dvorak added that regular commercial DVB-T2 services will not be launched in 2013 and that DVB-T2 “must be controlled by customers, not the wishes of operators.”
Earlier, Procházka had said that having completed DVB-T2 tests at the end of last year, the CRa would like to undertake new ones for a period of 12 months starting this May.
They would start in Prague and then be extended to three other cities, eventually covering 36% of the population.
Among the areas they would test would be compatibility with devices on the market, mobile services, 3D and pay-TV.
Procházka also said that the CRa is in talks with set-top box manufacturers who would by able to supply them with receivers within three months of the launch of a service.
The pre-requisites for one would be the allocation of frequencies and a D-Book, which are the CTU’s responsibility.
