Olympic Games kick off in Coventry - two days ahead of London

THE OLYMPIC Games are kicking off in Coventry today - two days before the London 2012 opening ceremony.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to watch the first two women’s football matches to be played in England as part of the biggest sporting event of year.
After months of preparations the wait will finally be over at 5pm today when World Champions Japan take on Canada at the Ricoh Arena, temporarily named the City of Coventry Stadium for the Olympics.

There will be a double header of women’s football starting with the first round for Group F between Japan and Canada, followed by Sweden and South Africa at 7.45pm.
Leader of Coventry City Council John Mutton said: “We’re tremendously excited about hosting Olympics football in our city - and can’t wait to welcome the world here.

"Nine out of ten Coventry people we’ve asked think there will be a positive impact on the city, with benefits to tourism and pride in our city.
“Many of our residents are looking forward seeing some world class football and we’ve got a packed programme of events across the city for people to enjoy during the Games. We’re so proud to have been chosen to host football here and we’re going to make sure everyone who visits us has an unforgettable experience.”
Motorists are being urged to arrive at the stadium at least two hours before kick-off to allow enough time to park and pass through security.
Car parks at the stadium will be closed and there is limited off-site parking at Exhall Grange and Holbrooks Primary but booking is essential. There is also limited blue badge parking.
Those without pre-booked parking can use city centre car parks at Belgrade Plaza, Coventry University, Gosford Street, Grove Street, Cox Street and Lower Ford Street.
A free shuttle bus service will be running on match days every few minutes from the city centre to the stadium.
The buses will leave from Pool Meadow Bus Station, Coventry Railway Station and Gosford Street three hours before each match day kick-off. They will depart from the venue for up to two hours after the final whistle.
Tomorrow will see the first men’s match at the City of Coventry Stadium between Group C teams Belarus against New Zealand. Kick off is 7.45pm.
To celebrate the opening ceremony on Friday, people across the city are invited to Millennium Place to take part in a mass bell ring.
